I’m writing a book about goal setting, and one of the major players in the field is the SMART Goal system, based on the tenets…
- Specific
- Measurable
- Achievable
- Realistic
- Timely
I’ve had a love-hate relationship with this type of goal setting for years. I would love to get your feedback on the process and how successful you have been following them.
If you have ever created a SMART Goal, I would love your responses to the survey below. This will really help with the book. Thanks!
Thanks for taking the survey. I’ll post the responses in a follow up post.
If you are an active Goal Setter, you might be interested in our Goal Setting Toolkit.
Question: How do you feel about SMART Goals? Please leave comments below.

Excellent survey, John. I’ll buy the book! I could use the tool…. or a personal secretary, housekeeper, business assistant… and most important, someone to sleep for me so I don’t have to do it.
The results are real interesting so far. I’ll post them tomorrow. The feedback will help guide me on my last few chapters, now that I know how people are actually doing with SMART goal setting.
I’ve always been under the opinion that the S&M mean the same thing, and the A&R mean the same thing.
They are really close, Patrick. That’s why I’ve had a real issue with them at times.
John,
Nice survey tool and I will be interested to see the book. I’ve gone back and forth on SMART goals. When I use them, they actually seem to work really well for me, but it does require some additional focus to get to that point. I think the A & R are the most important to me and I think you really have to start small with them so that you actually achieve them. You can continue to scale up as you get more comfortable with the process.
Ray
Thanks for the comment, Ray. I’ve had reasonable luck with SMART Goals, but I’m usually battling with an entrenched habit which causes long term problems. Be sure to take a look at my survey results today. I think you’ll find them interesting.
